Hans Olsen (1902-83) Modular Bench/Sofa
This Hans Olsen 161 Modular Seating set manufactured for Bramin, Denmark consists of four pieces - a bench, two cane seats and an end table. Olsen believed in the versatility of seating and was interested in pieces that could be arranged in a variety of layouts depending on the setting. The chairs and end table are removable from the frame or can rest on the floor for low seating, allowing the bench to be used as a daybed. Made of teak. Good condition with two original cushions upholstered in dark brown tweed. H 29 3/4", L 77", D 26 3/4"
Hans Olson's modular seating arrangement became known to the wider public when famed American graphic designer Saul Bass used it in his Case Study House #20B in 1958. Danish designer Olsen believed in a playful and experimental approach to furniture design. Olsen challenged contemporary production methods and much of his inspiration came from the opportunities offered by moulding wood.
